OUR STORY.

Originally opened in October 2018 by 1331 Bar & Restaurant and run by Stu, The Cheese Trader was initially a bit of an idea on a whim.
Having come from a hospitality background, we were inspired by cheese mongers such as I.J Mellis in Edinburgh & The Courtyard Dairy in Austwick, to not only fulfil our own incessant love of cheese but to source and provide the highest quality cheese within the city walls of York.

And so it began.
The Cheese Trader was born; quietly nestled in the shadows of York minster on the cobbled streets of Grape Lane.
What followed was a phenomenal first two years of trading, building our clientele base and a hell of a lot of cheese tasting.
As we ventured into the new year of 2020, worldwide events meant sadly we would have to close to shop until it became safe or viable.
As these events prolonged, the opportunity arose in October 2020 for Stu to take over The Cheese Trader as owner (thanks to S&J), with the view to continue what we had started.

Since we officially relaunched & reopened we have had a tremendous amount of support from all our regulars, customers from afar as well as independent businesses alike, making us enormously proud to be part of the indie business scene in this incredible city.
The challenges we've faced along the way only makes us more driven in what we do and what we aim to provide from the best & award winning suppliers in the country.
We handpick our wide range of cheese from dairies all across the UK, specialising in bringing you the highest quality in regional produce while we're at it, and of course a nod to our E.U favourites along the way.

So, that's us i guess, in all our cheesy glory.
Come along and see for your self.

TA MATE.
